Agoda.com readies hotel deals in the leadup to Japan’s cherry blossom season

Agoda.com, one of Asia's leading hotel booking sites and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN), is offering great hotel deals to celebrate Japan's famed sakura season – known commonly outside of Japan as the cherry blossom season – one of the country's most popular and beautiful annual events.

The cherry tree – its scientific name is Prunus serrulata – can be seen throughout Japan in great numbers, that for most of the year sit silently in the background. Come spring, the trees erupt with blossoms in a wave that moves slowly from the southern district of Okinawa to the northern island of Hokkaido, creating lush pink, white, and red canopies in parks and along streets throughout the country. In addition to being extremely beautiful, the blossoms are highly symbolic of life, death, unity, and the pursuit of perfection, all significant elements in Japanese culture.

Predicting the date of the blossom arrival is somewhat of a sport and guessing game in Japan. This  year the Japanese weather service has said the best viewing areas will be in Fukuoka during the last week of March, moving slowly north and finishing up near Iwaki, about 200km north of Tokyo in early April. They can be seen further north than this, but the colder weather makes their appearance less predictable.

Agoda.com, one of Asia’s leading hotel booking sites and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN), has announced great deals on Indian hotels in the leadup to the annual Holi Festival, India’s famously raucous and cheerful celebration of color.

Photos of smiling tourists and locals covered head to toe in colored powder are now a universal image of travel and tourism in India, and are the heart of the joyous Indian festival called Holi. In the tradition of many Asian festivals, the Holi celebration draws on elements of astrological rituals, religious traditions, and unique cultural characteristics.

Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the story of immortal Hiranyakashipu and his son, Prahlada who became enemies after the son devoted himself to Vishnu instead of his father. After surviving several attempts on his life, Prahlada was tricked into sitting in a fire along with his scheming aunt Holika, who had a fireproof cape. To everyone’s surprise, Holika was burned and Prahlada survived the inferno just fine, proving he had made the right choice.

Agoda.com recommends great hotels in Milan for a refreshing winter holiday

Agoda.com, Asia’s leading hotel booking site and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN), has made a list of amazing hotels in Milan, Italy, that are perfect for a winter holiday in a city known throughout the world as a hub of global fashion and Italian culture.

Among Italy’s many great cities, Milan stands out as one of the most dynamic. As the country’s second-largest after Rome, Milan is also known as a major cultural center, and a hub for industry, transport, and finance. In winter, the temperature averages just above freezing, which is not terribly cold, but cool enough to ensure a nice winter chill and snow-covered peaks nearby, which are great for skiing. Milan has plenty of indoor attractions as well, ensuring that plenty of sightseeing can be done away from the winter weather.

Among these are Milan’s many famous museums, including the Pinacoteca di Brera and its world-class collection of Italian paintings; the Sforzesco Castle with Michaelangelo’s final sculpture Rondanini Pietà; and the Santa Maria delle Grazie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also houses Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. Milan’s beautiful architecture, too numerous to mention in its entirety here, deserves a mention as well. Standouts include the Duomo di Milano, a stunning Gothic cathedral with room for 40,000 people that took 600 years to finish; and the Cimitero Monumentale, which many name as the world’s most beautiful cemetery.

Agoda.com announces great hotel deals in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Agoda.com, Asia’s leading hotel booking site and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN),  is providing New Year deals in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s historic and often underrated capital.

For a long time after Phnom Penh’s near-desertion in the wake of the Vietnam War and overthrow of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, it was often called the “Wild West of Asia.” Thankfully over the past few decades, great strides have been made in making the city one of the region’s more livable, enjoyable, and culturally rich destinations.

Legend says the city was founded in 1372 when a woman named Penh built a temple on a hill (phnom, in the Khmer language) to house several statues of the Buddha that she found. From there, the city’s fortunes waxed and waned as various conflicts and colonial interests shaped the region, until it was finally declared Cambodia’s capital in 1866. From 1867 until its independence in 1953, Cambodia was under French rule, which is still evident from some of the architecture in the city, although only several good examples remain.

Agoda.com gets ready for a Scottish New Year with hotel deals in Edinburgh

Agoda.com, Asia’s leading hotel booking site and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN), is providing superb hotel deals in Edinburgh, Scotland for Hogmanay, the traditional Scottish New Year and one of the biggest celebrations in Scotland’s historic capital.

Hogmanay’s origins aren’t clear, but it was likely influenced by a combination of Gaelic, Viking, Norse, and even Roman traditions. Many Scots consider Hogmanay even more important than Christmas, as the traditional celebration of Jesus’ birth was officially banned in 1640, allowing the New Year celebrations to become the main winter solstice event in Scottish culture. Indeed, Christmas Day only became an official public holiday again in 1958.

Today, Hogmanay is a key part of the larger year-end celebrations that begin in mid-November and go right through to the first week of January, but Edinburgh’s main Hogmanay celebrations this year last from 30 December to 1 January.
